It's true...
Who do you know that wakes up in the morning and thinks... 'I'm going to hurt people today and kill them for the fun of it!'?
NO ONE!!
People like to think of themselves as 'good' or at least cool. They never like to be the villain, sure you can be forced into acting the villain or into a villain like action but who does it out of pure spite?
People do things because they believe that what they are doing is for the better.
Tyrants think "People can't rule themselves... I'll do the ruling for them." or at least they rationalize it that way. They lie to themselves until they believe what they are telling themselves. Crazy right?
Moral of the story... I don't have any bad guys in my story. Just people who have been mislead or have mislead themselves into actions that aren't the best.... there.
Rambler out.
That is a good point. x) Except that I do have one character who wants to be the bad guy, solely for the fact that the bad guy doesn't have to care about other people. In his mind, bad guys don't sacrifice anything because they don't love anyone, and therefore life is easier that way. Heroes are expected to care, and thus they're vulnerable.
ReplyDeleteBut I certainly agree that nobody (aside from total psychopaths) wake up and think "I'm going to kill someone for the heck of it." They justify themselves somehow, whether it be in the name of their god, their country, or just revenge. x)
